Implementation of Sexual and Reproductive Health Programs

A woman and her baby access health services.

This toolkit provides information and guidance on implementing sexual and reproductive health services. The resources and tools available are based on the experience of several Central American countries in their efforts to increase access to and improve reproductive health services.

Reproductive health is essential to advancing development and has been highlighted as a key target of the third Sustainable Development goal (Good health and Wellbeing), to ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services, including for family planning, information and education, and the integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programs by 2030.

Within this toolkit you will find examples of effective program planning, design, implementation, as well as national strategies that address the diverse and multicultural needs of country populations and with a strong emphasis on rights-based family planning and intercultural approaches. Many of the available resources can be adapted or revised for use in specific country contexts and unique programmatic circumstances. The toolkit consists of the following modules:

  • Technical background
  • Policies, norms, guidelines and protocols of various countries
  • Program design, implementation, and management
  • Behavior change communication
  • Training

Presented are a collection of selected resources for health policy makers, program managers, service providers and other technical health personnel. The toolkit provides a few resources on quality improvement and supply chain management in the context of reproductive health. However, for more in-depth information please see our Supply Chain Management Toolkit and our Quality Improvement for Maternal, Child, and Neonatal Health Services Toolkit.
