The Lancet’s new Series on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Latin America charts the complex political, economic, and social forces that shape health policy making. An accompanying Health Policy paper examines the association between the financing structure of health systems and UHC. In the past few decades, important policies and strategic initiatives in health and development have been embraced by Latin America, with the active participation and support of the Pan American Health Organization, WHO, and other partners. Latin America is a laboratory to study the mechanics of implementing UHC.
