Rebeca Gómez, aged 20, began to swell. She was six months pregnant, but that sudden increase in weight was not normal. It was her first pregnancy and she began to get worried. She had been taught to detect and identify alarm signs during pregnancy and suspected something was not right. Rebeca lives in the Tzabalhó community, in the Chenalhó municipality, in Chiapas. She is part of a modest family along with her husband and her parents. Doctor Carlos Bernardo González detected Rebeca’s pregnancy when she was four months into her pregnancy. Since then, he periodically travelled to Rebeca’s house to monitor her health and follow up on her checkups.
When he detected the increase in weight of his patient, Doctor Carlos Bernardo González requested an emergency ultrasound in the San Juan Chamula community. The result surprised everyone. Rebeca was pregnant with triplets. Her pregnancy was a high risk one. Doctor González activated the network of services offered by the health jurisdiction, the zone teams and the medical care quality assurance teams. Rebeca was cared for at the Women’s Hospital in San Cristóbal de las Casas, where she got the gynecological cares he needed and where they recommended that she undergo a cesarean section.
