Rebeca Gómez, aged 20, began to swell. She was six months pregnant, but that sudden increase in weight was not normal. It was her first pregnancy and she began to get worried. She had been taught to detect and identify alarm signs during pregnancy and suspected something was not right. Rebeca lives in the Tzabalhó community, in the Chenalhó municipality, in Chiapas. She is part of a modest family along with her husband and her parents. Doctor Carlos Bernardo González detected Rebeca’s pregnancy when she was four months into her pregnancy. Since then, he periodically travelled to Rebeca’s house to monitor her health and follow up on her checkups.

When he detected the increase in weight of his patient, Doctor Carlos Bernardo González requested an emergency ultrasound in the San Juan Chamula community. The result surprised everyone. Rebeca was pregnant with triplets. Her pregnancy was a high risk one. Doctor González activated the network of services offered by the health jurisdiction, the zone teams and the medical care quality assurance teams. Rebeca was cared for at the Women’s Hospital in San Cristóbal de las Casas, where she got the gynecological cares he needed and where they recommended that she undergo a cesarean section.

Doctor González performed all of Rebeca’s following checkups at her home, in order to avoid the need for her to travel. When the scheduled operation date arrived, the doctor accompanied Rebeca to the Women’s Hospital and stayed by her side untol the three babies were delivered.

The identification of the pregnancy, personalized monitoring and quick detection of a risk situation guaranteed that Rebeca’s pregnancy concluded happily, with a healthy mother and three healthy babies.

Doctor Carlos Bernardo González efficiently implemented the Chiapas local micro-regional plan strategy, which allows the early detection of pregnant women. Likewise, the Medical Care Strengthening program allows guaranteeing medical care services in locations through mobile units. Doctor Carlos is part of this program that provides services to five locations and benefits 1,447 inhabitants. The mean of pregnancies in this zone is between eight and fifteen pregnant women per location. Rebeca and her husband have decided to go to the medical services to monitor the growth and development of the triplets, as well as to accept a family planning method.
