An innovative development model supporting the transformation of national health systems to expand coverage, access, and use of services among the poorest women and children in Mesoamerica.
The Salud Mesoamerica Initiative (SMI) is a public-private partnership aimed to improve access to quality health for 1.8 million women and children in Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize, and the State of Chiapas in Mexico.
Building on malaria elimination efforts implemented in the region in recent years, the countries of Mesoamerica, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic, together with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), developed and launched the Regional Malaria Elimination Initiative (RMEI) in 2018.

After 10 years , the Salud Mesoamérica Initiative (ISM) –led by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Carlos Slim Foundation, and the governments of Canada and Spain– is organize the international gathering "Salud Mesoamérica: Equity - Quality - Impact" to share lessons learned, address challenges and celebrate the significant impacts achieved to strengthen and improve access to quality health for 1.8 million women, newborns, children and adolescents in Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, the state of Chiapas –in Mexico–, and Panama.
The agenda is intended to foster a dynamic exchange of ideas among donors, ministers of health, high- level oficials, multilateral institutions, regional entities, and technical experts.
